Jeff Koons

By Cellina (Dawon You) MYP 5B

Jeff Koons was born in 1955 in Pennsylvania and he is one of the most popular modern artists in the United States. He mainly made large-scale works with objects and symbols that we often encounter in our daily lives. Koons has always split critics, some blame him as a widespread self-director, and others praised him as a central artist who can contribute to art history. Koons has challenged top collectors to change their ideas about what art looks like rather than disgruntling the artistic Philistinism.

The balloon animals of Jeff Koons are one of his most famous works. They show play and disposable culture in childhood, but they take decisive and realistic forms. Koons once described his balloon dog sculpture as 'Our Symbol'. He argued that the way a balloon dog talks about breathing and exhaling is very symbolic of human condition. In the form of balloon animals, dogs have a personal memory of our childhood joy and play. It is a collective and very personal thing. Balloon animals are disposable symbols that show our material youth and show our charm with temporary pieces.
